Which gutter faults can be repaired?

Most common gutter faults can be repaired without replacing the whole system:

  • Leaking joints, where the rubber seal inside a uPVC union has perished or slipped
  • Sagging or loose gutters, where brackets have snapped, worked loose or rotted out of the fascia
  • Cracked corners and stop ends, often split by frost or a ladder leant against them
  • Overflowing sections, where the gutter has lost its fall and water pools instead of running to the outlet
  • Damaged downpipes, with broken brackets, cracked sections or loose joints

What causes gutter damage in Blackburn?

Gutter damage in Blackburn is mostly caused by weather, weight and age. Heavy, frequent rain fills gutters fast, and a blocked gutter full of water and silt is heavy enough to pull brackets loose. Frost splits fittings that hold standing water, and older plastic goes brittle after years of sun. Strong winds coming off the moors can also lift loose sections.

On older terraced houses, gutters may be cast iron, and on some houses they sit on timber fascias that can rot behind the paint. A repair on these homes sometimes means fixing what holds the gutter up, not just the gutter itself.

How is a leaking gutter joint repaired?

A leaking gutter joint is repaired by cleaning the joint and replacing the union or its seal. On uPVC gutters, the contractor unclips the joint, fits a new union and refits the gutter. On cast iron, the old joint is unbolted, cleaned and resealed with a gutter sealant, then bolted back together. Sealant smeared over the outside of a leak rarely lasts long.

How is a sagging gutter fixed?

A sagging gutter is fixed by replacing broken brackets, adding extra brackets where they are too far apart, and resetting the run so it falls gently towards the outlet. If the fascia board behind is rotten, it may need repairing first, otherwise new brackets have nothing solid to grip.

When is a repair not worth doing?

A repair isn't worth doing when faults keep appearing along the whole run, the plastic is brittle and cracking, or cast iron is rusted through. At that point, gutter replacement usually costs less over time than repeated repairs. A contractor can tell you which makes more sense after seeing the gutters.

What should you include in your request?

Say what the problem is, where it is on the house and what the gutters are made of, if you know. A photo taken from the ground, showing the leak or sag, helps contractors judge the job before they visit.
