Tip: contractors can quote more accurately when they know more. Add which side of the house is affected, what you've noticed and anything that could make access tricky, such as a conservatory or a steep drive.
Why should moss be removed from a roof?
Moss should be removed from a roof because it holds water against the tiles and breaks off into the gutters. Thick moss can lift the edges of tiles and block the gaps that let rain run off. In cold weather the trapped water can freeze and crack older tiles and slates. Clumps that wash down settle at the gutter outlets, one of the most common causes of overflowing gutters.
Why do Blackburn roofs grow moss?
Blackburn roofs grow moss because moss thrives in damp, shaded places, and the town's frequent rain keeps roofs wet for long spells. North-facing slopes, roofs shaded by trees and houses in sheltered valleys are worst affected. Homes near the River Darwen, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal or the woodland around Pleasington and Witton can stay damp longer. Slate roofs on older terraces and concrete tiles on newer estates both gather moss and lichen over time.
How is moss removed from a roof?
Moss is removed by hand, with scrapers and stiff brushes that lift it without damaging the roof. The loose moss is bagged, then the gutters and downpipes are cleared of anything that fell in. Many contractors finish with a biocide treatment that kills remaining spores and slows regrowth.
Pressure washing isn't usually recommended on roofs. High-pressure water can wear the surface off concrete tiles, crack older slates and clay tiles and drive water under the roof covering. Ask how a contractor plans to clean your roof before agreeing to the work.
Can you have moss removed from the gutters only?
You can have moss removed from the gutters only, and that's often where homeowners start. Clearing the gutters stops the overflowing for now, but if the roof is covered in moss the gutters will fill again. When you answer the questions on this page, you can choose roof, gutters or both. For a gutters-only job, see gutter cleaning.
When is the best time for moss removal?
The best time for moss removal is a dry spell in spring or early autumn. Dry moss comes away more easily, a dry roof is safer to work on, and treatments need a few dry hours to soak in. Avoid frosty days, when tiles and slates are more brittle.
How often does moss need removing?
Moss usually needs removing every few years, depending on shade, roof pitch and the type of tile or slate. A treatment after removal can lengthen the gap, and keeping the gutters clear in between stops loose moss causing blockages.
What should you include in your request?
Include where the moss is, the type of property and how many storeys it has. A couple of photos of the roof taken from the ground help contractors quote.
