Tip: contractors can quote more accurately when they know more. Add which side of the house is affected, what you've noticed and anything that could make access tricky, such as a conservatory or a steep drive.
How do gutter repair contractors set their prices?
Gutter repair contractors set their prices in one of three ways:
- Fixed price per job. Common for small repairs such as a leaking joint, a broken bracket or a loose downpipe.
- Per metre. Used for longer repairs or replacement sections, typically around £30 per metre for uPVC and £60 to £70 per metre for cast iron, according to Checkatrade's May 2026 cost guide.
- Day rate. Used for larger or less predictable jobs. The same guide gives about £150 per day for a gutter repair specialist.
Many contractors also have a minimum charge, so a tiny job may cost the same as a slightly bigger one.
What do access costs add?
Access costs add to the price when a ladder isn't enough. A scaffold tower, a cherry picker or full scaffolding can cost more than the repair itself on a tall or awkward building. Some jobs need a licence from the council to put equipment on the pavement. Ask contractors how they'll reach the gutters and whether access is included in their price.
Do prices include VAT?
Prices may or may not include VAT. Some small trades aren't VAT registered, while larger firms add VAT at 20%. Cost guides often show prices before VAT. Always ask whether the quote includes VAT, so you're comparing like with like.
What should a written quote include?
A written quote should include:
- The faults to be fixed and the parts to be replaced
- The material and colour of any new parts
- How the gutters will be reached
- Whether waste is taken away and the gutters are cleaned and tested
- The total price, including VAT, and when payment is due
- Any guarantee on the work
How can you compare quotes fairly?
You can compare quotes fairly by checking that each one covers the same work. A low quote that fixes one joint isn't comparable with one that reseals the whole run. Ask about public liability insurance and how long they've been doing gutter work.
