How regularly should you book a professional gutter cleaning service?
Most homes should book a professional gutter clean once a year, ideally in late autumn. Homes surrounded by trees, with mossy roofs or with a history of blockages may need cleaning twice a year, in late autumn and spring.

How this site uses cookiesLast step: how can contractors reach you?
Takes about 30 seconds.
Wet weather keeps gutter contractors busy and diaries can fill up quickly, so don't delay.

Tip: contractors can quote more accurately when they know more. Add which side of the house is affected, what you've noticed and anything that could make access tricky, such as a conservatory or a steep drive.
What decides how often gutters need cleaning?
How often gutters need cleaning depends on how much falls into them. The biggest factors are:
- Trees. Gutters near large trees fill with leaves, twigs and seeds far faster than those on open streets.
- Roof moss. Moss on the roof breaks off and washes into the gutters in every heavy shower.
- Roof type. Older slate and concrete tile roofs shed grit and moss more than newer roofs.
- Rainfall. Frequent heavy rain, as in Blackburn, carries more debris into gutters and shows up blockages quickly.
- Birds. Nesting material and droppings build up where birds roost under the eaves.
How often is right for different homes?
Most Blackburn homes fall into one of three groups:
| Home | Suggested cleaning |
|---|---|
| Open street, few trees, clean roof | Once a year, in late autumn |
| Some trees nearby or a mossy roof | Once a year, plus a check in spring |
| Near woodland or large trees, or with recurring blockages | Twice a year, late autumn and spring |
Homes near the woodland around Pleasington and Feniscowles, or close to Witton Country Park, are more likely to be in the last group.
What signs mean you need cleaning sooner?
Signs you need cleaning sooner are water spilling over the gutter during rain, plants growing out of the gutter, a downpipe that stays dry in a downpour and damp patches or streaks on the wall. If you notice any of these, book a clean rather than waiting for the usual time.
Can you clean less often with gutter guards?
You can sometimes clean less often with gutter guards, but they don't remove the need for cleaning. Fine silt and moss still get through, and leaves collect on top of the guards. For details, see whether gutters fitted with leaf guards still need cleaning.
Is a regular booking a good idea?
A regular booking can be a good idea if your gutters block every year. Some contractors offer a yearly or twice-yearly visit at the same time each year, so you don't need to remember. Ask about this when you compare quotes, and check there's no long-term contract you'd rather avoid.
